Holiday Safety Tips

As we approach the holiday season it's a special time of year, but also a time to be cautious.  Here are some tips to help you and your family stay safe.


  • Avoid driving alone or at night.
  • Keel car doors locked and windows closed while in your car.
  • Park in a well-lighted area if you must shop at night.
  • Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells or cars with tinted windows.
  • Park close to your destination and take notice of where you parked.
  • Never leave car running when unoccupied or with children inside.
  • Do not leave packages visible in your car.
  • Locate your keys prior to going to the car.
  • Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels.
  • Do not approach your car if there are suspicious people in the area.


  • Choose a location well lighted, in a mall or near a police station.
  • Shield your PIN by shielding it from anyone who is standing near you.
  • Do not throw your ATM receipt away at the ATM location.


  • Shop during daylight hours.
  • Dress casually and comfortably.
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.
  • If possible, do not carry a purse or wallet.
  • Only carry necessary cash, checks and/or credit card you expect to use.
  • Pay for purchases with credit card or check when possible.
  • Keep cash in your front pocket.
  • Notify credit card issuer immediately if your credit card is lost, stolen or misused.
  • Keep a record of all o your credit card numbers in a safe place at home.
  • Avoid overloading yourself with packages.
  • Beware of strangers approaching for any reason.


  • If possible, leave small children home with a sitter.
  • Teach children to go to a store clerk and ask for help in case your are separated.
  • Don't allow children to make unaccompanied trips to the restroom.
  • Don't let children go to or be at the car alone.
  • Teach children their full name, address and phone number.

At Home

  • Be cautious to lock doors and windows when leaving the house.
  • When leaving home for an extended period of time, ask neighbors to watch your house and pick up the mail.
  • Indoor and outdoor lights should be on an automatic timer.
  • Leave a radio or tv on so the house looks and sounds occupied.
  • Contact the Carmel Police at 317-571-2500 and notify them of your vacant house.
  • Don't have gifts visible from the windows.
  • Make sure doors and passage ways are clear from a Christmas tree or other holiday displays.
  • Make sure wiring on lights are not damaged or frayed.
  • Place the Christmas tree in water or wet sand to keep it green.
  • Don's place wrapping paper in the fireplace.

Strangers at the door

  • Be aware the criminals sometimes pose as couriers delivering gifts.
  • Be cautious of door to door solicitation for charitable causes.
  • Donate to recognized charitable organizations.

Hosting a Party

  • Serve non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Find alternative transportation for intoxicated guests.
  • Arrange for an official designated driver that will not drink.

Attending a Party

  • Have something to eat before consuming alcoholic beverages.
  • Eat high protein foods that will stay in your stomach longer.
  • Remember only time will eliminate the alcohol from your body.
  • Know your safe limit.
  • Never drink and drive.
