Carmel Mayor's Annual City Talk

The Carmel Mayor, Jim Brainard shared his State of the City address today sharing his plans and goals for the city.  The top five items include:

  1. Tax dollars will continue to be invested in redevelopment and partnerships with private companies.  The city funds infrastructure by borrowing against anticipated future tax revenue.  It then uses that revenue as it comes in to pay off the debt.
  2. The mayor does agree that debt from developments as in the recently announced Midtown is eventually worth it.  The mayor said that the city's debt picture is healthy in the long term, as far out as 2035.
  3. Most of the development will remain downtown.  The downtown area will remain a priority for the mayor.
  4. Next target is parks and infrastructure.  Carmel will add it's first dog park and focus o building up a city that will be here in 100 years with playgrounds, parks and recreation.
  5. The city boasts some of the lowest property taxes in Indiana.  A chart was shared showing taxes have decreased when adjusted for inflation since Brainard became mayor.
